When residents talk about Boca Raton, they talk about what they love — a city of beautiful parks and beaches, safe neighborhoods, vibrant culture, and a quality of life that makes people proud to call Boca home.
And at the same time, they are experiencing traffic, longer travel times, and increasing pressure on how the City functions day to day.
The recent election made it clear that residents felt things were out of sync.
At the Council meeting two weeks ago, there was clear alignment on the direction for Boca.
The challenge is in the decisions that follow — especially when those decisions don’t always align easily.
We see that in: public land use, recreation balance, downtown planning, economic activity and traffic, and public safety priorities.
Each decision can make sense on its own. But together, they shape how the City functions and how residents experience it.
The details matter.
My request is that staff continue to present metrics, and also propose timelines with mileposts for key decisions coming out of the discussions at the last meeting, as well as high-level benchmarks for ongoing issues such as traffic, land use, and services.
Based on the data already available, staff is in a position to begin defining those benchmarks, which can support Council discussion on what should be tracked and how progress should be measured over time.
Those benchmarks can then be used to guide recommendations and decision making and track progress, with periodic reporting to Council in a dashboard format.
They could also be made accessible to the public through the City’s website and email.
That would help connect decisions to outcomes, and reinforce confidence that the City is moving in a balanced and deliberate direction.
